Ashford Spinning Wheel

I went to my local knitters guild meeting yesterday to see if it was something I'd be interested in. While I was there, another 'visitor' told us of an auction that was happening today. Word was, there was a "newer Ashford spinning wheel" up for sale. I went thinking I would see a glorious bidding war. WRONG!

As it turns out, I was the only one to bid on it. It looks to be the "Traditional" model. The lot included a lazy kate and a 'thing' for making multi-ply yarn. I paid only $25! That's right baby! I'm the proud owner of a spinning wheel. I even bought a pair of combing cards for $12.50. All I need is some wool....

Pictures are below. The label says Kit-Kraft on the top, it's too shiny to read. Please tell me what the rubber band is for (if anything) and the string with the wire loop. I think it's related to the tension knob, but I don't know how.

Any and all advice is appreciated. I was buying blind but knew $25 was completely a steal.

**NOTE: Please disregard the dust. I believe it was part of the purchase price :)

It says "Kit-Kraft" at the top of the label.

Extras that came with the wheel (minus the cards, I paid $12.50 for them).

What's the fishing line thing for?

What's the metal hook and rubber band (center post) for?

That really was a steal for $25! I don't know anything about wheels (I only used one once to try it out for a while) but I'm sure you could find someone to help you out.

What A SCORE!!! That's REMARKABLE!!! I'm very jealous!!!

The fishing line and rubber band are part of the scotch tension for the wheel. They should be connected.

The fishing line goes up over the bobbin, in the groove. It helps hold the bobbin in place when you are winding on. (hard to describe...)

See if you can attach the rubber band to the fishing line - it gives the fishing line a bit of "give" - then bring the fishing line up over the bobbin. You need the fishing line to have a bit of tension, but not much.

Anyway - not a good description - it's late, and I've been having wine...

email me at tonyiahl*at*gmail.com, I can explain better...

What a steal! This is an older Ashford wheel and is prettier than the newer ones IMO. Tonyia was right about the fishing line being your scotch tension. The metal hook is your orifice hook. You'll use that to "fish" your spinning from the bobbin and through the orifice. The rubber band attached to it was what the previous owner used to keep it handily attached to the wheel so it wouldn't get misplaced.
